Atypical depression, a subtype of major depression, is the most common form of depression today. People who suffer atypical depression exhibit all the normal symptoms of depression but they also react to external positive experiences in a positive way. Atypical depression sufferers respond to their environment, enjoying the company of friends but slipping back into deep depression when alone or faced with a stressful situation. It is this aspect of atypical depression that differentiates it from melancholic depression in which external positive experiences still result in depressed feelings.

People who suffer from atypical depression also exhibit other symptoms that aren’t normally associated with “normal” depression including:

Increase in appetite with a weight gain of ten or more pounds.
  Hypersomnia -over sleeping of more than 10 hours per day.
  Leaden paralysis of the arms and legs
  Long term pattern of sensitivity to rejection in personal situations that causes social or work related withdrawal.

In 1998 Dr. Andrew A. Nierenberg, associate director of the depression clinical and research program at Massachusetts General Hospital, published a study that found 42% of participants suffered from atypical depression, 12% had melancholic depression, 14% had both depression subtypes and the remaining did not suffer from depression.

Studies have also found that atypical depression begins earlier in a person’s life than other forms of depression with most sufferers beginning to show symptoms in their teenage years. Those who suffer from atypical depression are also at greater risk of suffering from other mental disorders such as social phobias, avoidant personality disorder or body dysmorphic disorder. Atypical depression is more prevalent in females than males as well, with nearly 70% of it’s sufferers being women.

Treating atypical depression is an ongoing process. Research has shown that MAOIs such as Nardil or Parnate work reasonably well as do the newer SSRI medications (Lexapro, Prozac, Zoloft). Most patients prefer the SSRIs because they do not exhibit the unpleasant side affects of the MAOIs.

It is also important that if you or someone you know suffers from atypical depression that you or they seek psychiatric help. Atypical depression is not easy to diagnose the treatment choices can vary from patient to patient. A general care practitioner does not have the expertise to differentiate between the subtypes of depression and may not know the best course of treatment for their patient.

If you are taking care of someone who is elderly and suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, first you need to remember that there are many stages of the disease and it is important to determine which stage they are in before you proceed with your care.

Sometimes a person will only show signs of ordinary memory loss, what might just seem like normal signs of aging, they will forget if they locked the door or not or they will forget to call you back, or they will misplace things and not know where their keys are but then after a time they will start to forget bigger things, like what day it is and what year they are in and then they will forget who you are altogether, and then they will forget who they are themselves and not know why they are in the house at all, and they will take to wandering outside looking for an answer that might finally put some peace back into their frantic minds. At this point, of course, if it has staged that far, you need to make sure you get them some assistance already because this can be a very dangerous stage and can result in fatalities or they might get lost or hurt somewhere out there all alone and that would not be something you would want them to endure.

At that point taking care of them means to have them in an assisted living facility or living with a full time nurse because they will need to be monitored at all hours, so that they are not in any danger of being a harm to themselves. They might resist but you need to make sure that they are overseen at all times because they might get into harmful situations otherwise that will really become a threat to their wellbeing. So, if you can, make sure they have someone to watch them at all hours.

However, if they are not in such a progressed state, there are other ways you can help them remember. Try to make them reminder cards, as many as they need, and put labels on things so that they do not forget or at least so they can have some sense of security in knowing there are guides present in case that they do. Try not to get impatient or frustrated with them, either. You need to understand that this is not their fault and cannot be helped and you cannot get angry or frustrated if they do not remember things that would be easy for you to recall because they are suffering. Instead, you have to try and understand that sometimes they will mistake the present for the past and sometimes you need to go along with it, because if you don’t it will only create confusion for them and difficulty finding peace in their surroundings. This is an important thing to do or else you will find that you harm them a lot more than help.

Certain factors that contribute to the development of diabetes are heredity. Heredity is a major factor. That diabetes can be inherited has been known for centuries. However, the pattern of inheritance is not fully understood. Statistic indicates that those with a family history of the disease have a higher risk of developing diabetes than those without such a background. The risk factor is 25 to 33 percent more.One reason why diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes runs in the family is because of the diabetes gene. But even it is caused by genetic factors beyond your control; there is no reason to suffer from it. Diabetes mellitus cannot be cured in full sense of the term, but it can be effectively controlled so that you would not know the difference.

Diet :Diabetes has been described by most medical scientists as a prosperity disease, primarily caused by systematic overeating. Not only is eating too much sugar and refined carbohydrates harmful, but proteins and fats, which are transformed into sugar, may also result in diabetes if taken in excess. It is interesting to note that diabetes is almost unknown in countries where people are poor and cannot afford to overeat.The incidence of diabetes is directly linked with the consumption of processed foods rich in refined carbohydrates, like biscuits, bread, cakes chocolates, pudding and icecreams.

Obesity: Obesity is one of the main causes of diabetes. Studies show that 60 to 85 % of diabetics tend to be overweight. In the United States of America, about 80 percent of type 2 non-insulin dependent diabetics are reported to be overweight. Excess fat prevents insulin from working properly. The more fatty tissue in the body, the more resistant the muscle and tissue cells become to body insulin. Insulin allows the sugar in the blood to enter the cells by acting on the receptor sites on the surface of the cells. Older people often tend to gain weight, and the same time, many of them develop and mild form of diabetes because who are over weight can often improve their blood sugar simply by losing weight.

Stress and Tension: There is a known connection between stress and diabetes mellitus, those who are under stress and/or lead an irregular lifestyle, need to take adequate precautions and make necessary lifestyle adjustments. Grief, worry and anxiety resulting from examinations, death of a close relative, loss of a joy, business failure and strained marital relationship, all a deep influence on the metabolism and may cause sugar to appear in the urine.

Smoking: Smoking is another important risk factor. Among men who smoke, the risk of developing diabetes is doubled. In women who smoke 25 or more cigarettes a day, the risk of developing diabetes is increased by 40 percent.

Lifestyle Risk: People who are less active have greater risk of developing diabetes. Modern conveniences have made work easier. Physical activity and exercise helps control weight, uses up a lot of glucose (sugar) present in the blood as energy and makes cells more sensitive to insulin. Consequently, the workload on the pancreas is reduced.

Now the question is do you take it for granted? Have you ever abused your heart knowingly or unknowingly? Are you scared of heart diseases? Do you know the fact that most people hit their buckets so early at a point in their life because of heart related diseases? Ok! So read on to know more about the factors that put your heart at risk and also you will find ways to Prevent Heart Disease by taking certain preventive measures.

There are many risk factors associated with heart related diseases. The most common factor however is high blood pressure which can eventually result in a stroke or heart attack. If you are a regular smoker and obese along with high blood pressure, then the chances of getting a heart attack is pretty high, you wouldn’t know when it will strike you. It’s like a sleeping cobra inside you, think about wanting to wake it up or not. High blood cholesterol is one of the most major risk factor associated with heart attacks. People mainly add cholesterol in their blood from too much consumption of saturated fats.

Obesity is another major risk factor which builds up more loads on your heart. Obesity increases the cholesterol level and blood pressure in your body. Your heart has to pump blood to a wider area when you are obese and with these barriers coming in it will be a bit more tougher for your heart to pump all the way again. So if you are obese, try to cut down your weight systematically and always keep yourself healthy and under the surveillance of a good physician from time to time.

Also smoking is a major cause of heart attacks and various other strokes. Smoking makes your heart work more and more and it also causes blood clots in your major arteries leading to nothing other than heart attack, the sleeping killer. Lack of physical exercise is another factor that will end up giving you heart diseases. Men are more prone to heart diseases than women, and that is only till the women hit their menopause, after this stage the risk is almost the same with both men and women.

Heart diseases can be hereditary too. If you have someone in your family who has had a heart disease before the age of fifty five, then there is a high probability that you will end up having a heart disease too. Also, birth control pills in women can show side effects that will end up in having heart diseases. So these are the major risk factors associated with heart diseases.

These factors are something to be really scared of and the only way to fight this is by making slight changes here and there. Eat healthy food, always!! Cut down on the excess consumption of saturated fat substances and stick onto unsaturated fat. Please don’t take up too much stress, yoga and meditation can help you bring this down. Quit smoking now, as you have no other choice.

Keep yourself fit and exercise regularly. You can go and enroll in your gym or some good martial art schools today or at least take your morning jogging sessions. Do you take your automobile to go to the grocery next block? Think about revising it, taking a walk always helps you. These are a few stuffs which you can do to prevent heart disease that might affect you someday.

Do you know that breast cancer has become one of the most prevalent cancers in the world? Yes, this disease has affected millions of people across the world mainly women. As you know October is being celebrated all around the world as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a large number of charities will be organizing various events and activities. The purpose of these events and activities are to enhance awareness of women about breast cancer and raise funds for its research. No doubt, October is the right time for everyone to be united and join the fight against this disease.

Misconceptions and Myths about Breast Cancer
The misconceptions and myths about breast cancer have made many women fear this disease. For example, most women believe that all breast lumps are cancerous. This is not true; more than eighty percent of lumps are non-cancerous. During this month, women can educate themselves about what exactly breast cancer is and what are the factors behind this disease. The main reason behind these myths and misconceptions is lack of awareness. It is important to improve your awareness and know how to reduce your risk of getting cancer.

According to research and survey reports, a woman has more chance of developing this disease compared to men. Gender is one of the greatest risk factors that can increase cancer risk. Although, there is nothing you can do about your gender, you can understand how important it is to be aware.
Research has also found that more than 80% of cancers are detected in women above 50. This means that chances of getting this disease increase with age. Although there is nothing you can do about your age, you can take all possible precautionary steps to reduce your chances of getting this disease. For example, you can regularly examine your breasts to know what is normal for you. Self examination of your breasts is a powerful tool to know the normal feel and look of your breasts. With help of self examination you can detect unusual changes which might be breast cancer symptoms.

Raise Breast Awareness
Many women do not know what changes to observe during breast examination. During this month, you can raise awareness in an event by educating women about changes they should look for during breast examination. These changes are:

• Change in shape or size of your breasts.
• Change in position and shape of your nipples.
• Nipple discharge
• Skin puckering or dimpling
• Swelling under armpit or around collarbone
• Rash on or around the nipple surface
• Lumpiness or thickening in any area of the breast
• Persistent pain in any part of the breast

The really hard part of finding a beauty regime that suits you is that skin is different and requires different things to make it beautiful. There are so many treatments to choose from that it automatically becomes a problem to find the right one for you. If you have sensitive skin you must choose a product that is gentle and does not make a problem you have become worse. By the same token some skin can take almost anything and stay clear.

Once you have found what suits your skin and what does not you are half way home. Depending on your problem – bad skin, wrinkles, brown spots, and bags under the eyes, you can do some research and find what seems to work best on your problem. There are plenty of products to choose from, you could choose from the least expensive and go from low to high cost.
Creams, lotions, and elixirs can soften lines, small wrinkles and brown spots.

Also, a small facial vibrator will bring the circulation to your face and give your skin a beautiful glow and soften the lines. The very best thing you can do is to always moisturize and you will avoid many of these problems. Eliminate smoking and lines around your mouth will be reduced.
Bags under the eyes depend on several things – too much salt causes retention of water or not enough sleep, and you can eliminate some swelling by sleeping with your pillow elevated. Sleeping on your face is a big part of wrinkles. Try a satin pillow case, your face will slide into a good position to help eliminate the pressure on your skin all night. There are some facial exercises that will help. Notice how men do not wrinkle like ladies – that is because they shave every day, and the positions they put their faces in is exercise.

If you have acne, that requires a different approach, you need a doctor to evaluate your problem and prescribe a skin treatment. Keep your skin clean – if you wear base be sure you wash it off before going to bed. It will clog your pores and make all problems worse.
These are all good tips but drinking excessively, not resting, staying out – these all effect you body’s health and most of all your skin. So try to live your life in moderation and reap the benefits of good health and lovely skin

Here in northern California, allergies are a significant health problem leading to fatigue, sick days from work and school, and secondary infections. Allergic rhinitis is a reaction to seasonal airborne allergens. It affects about 7 percent of the population of North America and is a risk factor for 88 percent of asthma patients. We have some excellent prescription medications for treating this, and there are many over-the-counter medications available also. However, BEWARE of the sedating effects of those nonprescription medications!!! Recent studies have shown that an individual on a therapeutic dose of diphenhydramine (Benedryl) is a more dangerous driver than one who is legally drunk on alcohol. Fortunately, there are also some effective alternative therapies for allergic rhinitis. Remember: no matter what method you use to treat your allergies, nasal rinsing to clear the mucus membranes of trapped allergens is essential. It only takes about 30 seconds, doesn’t hurt a bit when done correctly, and makes all the difference. I recommend Nasopure®, a product developed by Dr. Hana Solomon, a pediatrician who has put together in one simple kit all you need for successful nasal rinsing. There is an excellent article about this on the Nasopure website (www.nasopure.com). If you are regularly using your Nasopure®, and still having difficulties, you can try some of the following remedies without significant side effects.
Vitamin and mineral supplements:
*    Vitamin A – 10,000 IU/day
*    Vitamin B6 – 50-100 mg/day
*    Vitamin B5 – 50-75 mg/day
*    Vitamin C – 1,000 mg/day in 3 divided doses
*    Vitamin E – 400 IU/day
*    Zinc – 20-30 mg/day
In addition some herbs and nutrients can help:
Quercetin has anti-allergy and anti-infiammatory effects if you take it 250mg two or three times a day.

Freeze-dried stinging nettles (Urtica dioica) can relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis at a dosage of 300mg twice a day.

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), also called fish oil, can help asthma patients with allergies by stabilizing the airways. They come in capsules and the total dose of the combination should be 2-4 g/day.

Acupuncture has given many patients significant relief. The Chinese medicine paradigm is very different than Western medicine, so I can not explain the mechanism of action. But I know that it is effective!See your doctor about allergy symptoms if you are unable to manage them on your own – the nonsedating antihistamines and anti-inflammatory nasal sprays available today are excellent in treating this significant health problem!

At this time, there are no natural arthritis cures publicly available in North America, or any unnatural cures for that matter. However, people have been known to beat this disease, or “cure” themselves. Others have been able to live with the disease drug free and symptom free for many years. How is all this possible?

As most of us know, a lot of the drugs used to treat arthritis only reduce pain and inflammation. These drugs have worked well for some people, allowing them to lead a more normal life. But for others, the drugs have been utterly useless and on top of that, all of these drugs have caused considerable side effects for many people.

Because of the standard ineffective treatments typically available to those suffering from arthritis, many people have been searching for natural replacements for drugs and even more effective natural arthritis cures. No actual “cure” exists for the disease, but as I have said before, people have been able to eliminate it from their body or live with the disease symptom free.

Believe it or not, there are natural (even stronger) alternatives to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) or other pain killers typically used to “treat” arthritis.

There are natural treatments “out there” that are even stronger and more effective for pain relief than NSAID without the side effects. Really…? But I have been conditioned to think this isn’t possible and if the medical industry doesn’t have an answer for me, then it doesn’t exist.

The person I just described is probably not you. The simple fact that you are right now reading this, tells me that you at least have the idea that the medical industry may not know everything there is to know at this time.

Natural Arthritis Cures (NSAID VS Natural COX-2 Inhibitors)

A more effective alternative to the use of NSAID is the use of a COX-2 inhibitor. Even though the drug forms of COX-2 inhibitor come with some side-effects, they are still a much safer alternative to NSAID. Unfortunately, drug COX-2 inhibitors are not only much more expensive than NSAID; they are still drugs and come with a few of side effects.

While it is true that NSAID inhibit COX-2 production, they also inhibit COX-1; which cause a lot of their known side-effects including gastro-intestinal-toxicity, ulcers and bleeding.

One of the more popular natural COX-2 inhibitors is Thunder-God-Vine. This natural replacement for COX-2 inhibitor drugs come with no known side effects and a much lower price tag.

Thunder God Vine is traditionally a Chinese herbal medicine. It has shown preliminary promise in treating patients with arthritis, but as of right now, it isn’t very well known.

Recent lab studies using an extract of thunder god vine found it to reduce prostaglandin production in rheumatoid arthritis knee tissue cells. Moreover, it was found that COX-2 protein expression was reduced significantly without effecting COX-1 protein expression.

This result demonstrated that the plant extract could reduce inflammation and pain by inhibiting COX-2 production without the side effects of inhibiting COX-1. The positive without the negative! There is also the fact that this is a herbal plant extract and not a synthetic drug. Thus by default, it should have much fewer side effects, if any at all and in this case it does.

Natural Arthritis Cures (Stop That Cartilage Loss)

Glucosamine is one of two main molecules that make up the cartilage found within joints; the second molecule is chondroitin. Like bones, your joint cartilage undergoes a constant process of breakdown and repair. However, to be repaired properly, the building blocks of the joints must be present and available.

Glucosamine is a precursor to a molecule called a glycosaminoglycan; this molecule is used in the formation and repair of cartilage. Chondroitin is the most abundant glycosaminoglycan in cartilage and is responsible for the resiliency of cartilage.

A 1999 study at the University of Liege in Belgium involved 212 patients worldwide. All of these patients suffered from osteoarthritis of the knee. This study was to determine the role of glucosamine in helping with the recovery of joint cartilage in people suffering from osteoarthritis.

In these studies, patients were randomly given either glucosamine or a placebo for three years. The patients’ pain was measured every four months and x-rays of their knees were taken. The glucosamine group had no further narrowing of the joint cartilage, as well as their condition improved. Narrowing of the joint cartilage was shown in the placebo group, as well, their pain had worsened.

This study was one of the first studies to show how glucosamine works by stopping the joints from narrowing. It was also the first long-term study conducted on glucosamine.

Even though there are no natural arthritis cures, or any cures, we can still naturally and effectively treat the pain and degradation of arthritis using very real science.

In order to determine if you have allergies, you can have your regular physician perform a skin and radioallergosorbent test. This is basically a blood test that helps them determine what you’re allergic to so that you can obtain the proper treatment for it. People who have allergies normally have symptoms that interfere with their everyday activities, so keeping a record of them can also assist your doctor in finding the right treatment for you.

Allergens that cause your body to act in such a way can be seasonal allergens such as pollen, grass, air, trees and weeds, which are very common. These Allergens are normally the most troublesome in late May. On top of seasonal allergens, there are other allergens that cause our bodies to have allergic reactions such as mold, dust, animal dander and a host of other irritants. It’s especially burdensome in rainy and humid weather.

If you’re having an allergic reaction to any of these allergens or something else, you may experience pressure around the nose area, and it may feel a little stuffy. You may also experience a runny nose, hives, sneezing, itching in the nose, eyes, and mouth, discolored circles around the eyes and it may feel like your ear is plugged or popping. However, there are some things that can temporarily protect you against these allergens and the symptoms that they encourage.

One of the most important things that you can do is to keep yourself clean. By showering or taking a bath before you go to bed at night, you can wash off any allergens that may have gotten in the skin or hair. Next, keep your home free of them. Do this by making sure your windows and doors are sealed and tightly closed. Because mold can grow in many places that aren’t visible to us, it’s best to set up a regular cleaning schedule for your shower curtains, walls, windows and any indoor trash cans. Do this with diluted bleach.

Consider investing in a dehumidifier to keep the air circulating and decrease the chances of mold growing in your home. The bottom line is that you should keep your home clean, and if your allergies are often severe, invest in allergen-resistant bedspreads and use air filters. Doing all of these things is not a guarantee that you won’t come in to contact with allergens and have your allergies flare up again; however, it can control the number of times you have to deal with them. To avoid having a severe reaction to pet allergens such as dander, it’s best to bathe your pet regularly, vacuum often, and if possible avoid having to much contact with the pet. Also, to keep these allergens from spreading all over the house keep your pet out of certain areas of the home such as the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. You may even want to consider keeping your pet outside.
